Lehenbauer grew up in rural Northwest Ohio. He attended Patrick Henry High School, the University of Toledo (1976-78) and Concordia University Nebraska (1978-80), graduating from the latter with a Bachelor of Science in Education.
At Concordia Nebraska, John met Renee Geiger from Memphis, Tennessee. They wed in 1981. John and Renee served as Lutheran School teachers in the Washington, D.C. area from 1980-1982.
In the Fall of 1982, John enrolled at Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, graduating in 1986. He served as Pastor of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Cloquet, Minnesota from 1986 to 1996, and as Pastor of Divine Savior Lutheran Church, Shepherdsville, Kentucky from 1996 to 2009.
He began serving as Pastor of Christ Lutheran Church of Perry/Kathleen in July 2009. Throughout most of his years of pastoral ministry, John has been involved with Lutheran mission start congregations.
In his spare time John runs, plays some adult soccer, enjoys most sports, and pretends he knows how to work on cars.
Renee is a homemaker, pianist, handbell choir director, substitute teacher, and enjoys crafts, canning, camping, working with children and youth, and making trips to our Lutheran missions in Honduras.
John and Renee are blessed with eight children, as well as numerous foreign exchange students who are considered family.
